The History of Hunter Douglas Honeycomb Shades

Back in 1977, Wendell Colson, who led Hunter Douglas research and development, began experimenting in a Boston attic. The energy crisis of the 1970s inspired him to create a shade that insulated drafty windows but still raised and lowered easily.

Hunter Douglas spent years refining Colson’s concept of air pockets trapped in fabric cells, then launched it in 1985 as Duette® Honeycomb Shades. The company later became the first manufacturer to earn energy performance certification for interior window coverings from the Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC).
